Inheritance tax planning starts with the value and ownership of your estate, gifts and intended beneficiaries. The normal nil-rate band is £325,000 and the standard rate is 40% above available allowances. A residence allowance or other exemptions may apply, but eligibility matters and savings cannot be guaranteed.
If you own a property together, find out whether it is held as joint tenants or tenants in common. Those arrangements affect what happens to an owner's share after death. Do not assume a will overrides the way a jointly owned asset passes; bring the ownership information to your consultation.
Unmarried partners should not rely on the same inheritance assumptions as spouses or civil partners. Recording your wishes in a valid will is especially important where a partner, children and other relatives could have competing expectations. Pension nominations and insurance beneficiaries may also need a separate review.
Planning for incapacity is a different task from deciding who inherits. Discuss both types of lasting power of attorney, suitable attorneys and replacements. Being someone's partner does not automatically give you authority to manage all of their individual finances.
See indicative guide prices; ask for a quote confirming scope and separate third-party charges.

An unmarried partner is not automatically entitled to inherit under the intestacy rules in England and Wales. A valid will helps record your intentions. Joint assets, dependency and possible claims need separate consideration, so seek advice on your circumstances.
No. The way the property is owned can affect what happens to it, but a will also covers other assets, executors, guardians and beneficiaries. Joint ownership and wills should be considered together.

No. A figure of up to £1 million can apply in some circumstances using transferable allowances and residence relief, but it is not automatic. Eligibility, who inherits the home, estate value and unused allowances all matter. Check GOV.UK guidance and seek advice.
The nil-rate band is £325,000 per person. The residence nil-rate band adds up to £175,000 when passing a home to direct descendants.
Yes. Gifts made more than 7 years before death are usually exempt. There are also annual exemptions and other allowances available.
Potentially yes, unless it passes to your spouse or is covered by the residence nil-rate band. We can advise on protection strategies.
Savings vary but can be substantial. Many clients save tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds through proper planning.
